IGA4Stent

Patient-tailored stents: an innovative computational isogeometric analysis approach for 4D printed shape-changing devices

“Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) take the lives of 17.9 million people every year, 31% of all global deaths”. Among the major CVDs, both obstructive and aneurysmal presentations can be treated using artery stents instead of more invasive open surgical repairs. Artery stents are complex structures whose effectiveness largely depends on their structural performance.

IGA4Stent is a joint interdisciplinary effort of two researchers of the University of Florence, with the advice of an external researcher in Vascular Surgery, aimed at providing innovative and more effective answers to some of the mechanical-related open issues which play a critical role in the onset of post-treatment complications.

The main research objectives of IGA4Stent are:

1. To develop a new super-fast, accurate and geometrically powerful computational approach to the simulation of shape-changing (patient-specific) endovascular stents.

2. To use 4D printing technologies to rapidly manufacture patient-tailored stents.

These objectives are fully in line with one of the main priority topics of PNR 2021-2027, namely SALUTE “Tecnologie per la salute”, in particular with Art. 7 whose priorities are: development of new technologies, including 3D printing, for the design of patient-specific biomedical solutions and the production of implantable and non-implantable devices, in particular endovascular and intravascular ones. In addition, the synergy of the IGA4Stent project with the “Tuscany Health Ecosystem” (THE), funded within PNRR initiatives, confirms the relevance of the project’s topic to the priorities of the PNR 2021-2027.

IGA4Stent also fully meets the mission of Horizon Europe Pillar II Cluster 1 Health, especially in developing health technologies, mitigating health risks, protecting populations and promoting good health and well-being in general and at work.
