In this talk I will be going through my 15+ years of professional years as well as through the last 8 years of teaching experience at the ETH Zurich, especially with the course “Conceptual Design of Structures / Project Work”, compulsory for all graduates in civil engineering, that covers the knowledge, skills, methods and motivation needed for a general approach to the design of structures.
Fernando Ortiz Quintana is a structural engineer with professional experience in structural design. He studied in Spain, the United States and Italy (University of Florence) and, after his Master's degree at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, he worked for engineering firms in Germany (Schlaich Bergermann und Partner), China (Arup) and Switzerland (Walt Galmarini, SMT & Equi Bridges). Since 2016, he has taught at ETH Zurich, where he directs the course “Conceptual Design of Structures / Project Work”. From 2019 to 2025, full professor of computer-aided structural analysis at the University of Bern. As a lecturer, he has been invited to universities in China, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Spain.
The Seminar will be both in Italian and English.

For PhD students will be released a certification of attendance with a recognition of 0.35 ETCS among soft skills.
